Mental health (a core part of wellbeing) is complex and very personal.
The journey of pregnancy and infant care is equally storied and unique for every woman (and father).
Thunai's approach to maternal well being aims to respect and cherish the complex and individual nature of both these journeys.
Perinatal distress has multiple risk factors and potential causes (see here). There can be silver bullet or a sweet pill to address this. We need a holistic approach that addresses the body, the mind and the support system.
Our approach is based on WHO's thinking healthy program. We also heavily draw on our own cultural practices (yoga, breathing, music, dance, kolam) to foster self-awareness and self-compassion. Of course, nutrition, sleep and rest are foundational and some mothers may not be able to access them as needed.
Helping her develop a better relationship with herself is the first step. Developing good bonding with the baby is critical for both her and the future adult. Rallying the partner and the family for support is crucial. Partner's mental health is also an important ingradient in this process.
Thunai believes creating an awareness of the importance of maternal mental health and well being is critical for the well being of our society. Our program is called "Thai Nalam Podhu Nalam" for this reason (translation - "If the mother is well, the society is well"). Awareness can open the door to seeking help when needed - instead of brushing it under the carpet.
Front line health care workers (especially at PHC's and maternity hospitals/IVF clinics) need to be sensitized. Thunai has a program for creating awareness and sensitization of maternal mental health for nurses and social workers.
The dream is to have a society where every child is born under the best of the circumstances....and grow to their full potential!
Wish us well and Join us in this journey!
